We elucidate the behavior of large regions of warm air
(thermals) rising in the earth's atmosphere. It is found
that inside a uniformly rising large spherical bubble
rotational motion of the air arises around a central
vortex line located in the equatorial plane of the bubble.
We determine the total energy of the rise process of
a thermal.
